A Latin Poem Translated into Russian in 1670: A Panegyric in Praise of King Louis XIII from Antoine de Pluvinel’s Book “Maneige Royal”

This paper offers an analysis of early prose translation a Latin panegyrical poem into Russian. The poem, “In lavdem Lvdovici XIII” was written by Peter / Petrus Pierre Valens in 1623 or earlier. It included the book “Maneige Royal”, first published under name A. de Pluvinel, who riding teacher young King Louis XIII. translated Russian 1670, albeit not from original French edition, but German version bilingual edition Royal Königliche Reitschul”, Braunschweig, 1626. book's title is verbatim one, “Korolevskaia ezdnaia shkola”. known two copies: RNB, F.XI.1 (Saint Petersburg), and as one texts Codex AD 10 (Västerås, Sweden). Our leads to conclusion that both itself copies most probably were made at Ambassadorial Chancery (Posol'skii prikaz). shows translator understood text quite well, although it contains few isolated errors. At same time, some these mistakes might have been result misprints original, they may caused copyist produced fair copy. seems very likely (as well entire book) Ivan Tiazhkogorskii, knew all three languages used (German, Latin, French). Although Tiazhkogorskii for part his native language, German, he able make decent translations also French; however, historical, political above mythological allusions difficulties.
